Attached is a photo showing t trial pieces for the Dzus fastners.
I was calculating the hole spacing and sizes and then doing a small trial.
I secured the spring wires using flat washers for a full secure.

1) are the washers neccesary?
2) the sheet metal deformation you see on the top part of the picture caused because I used the washers.


My overall concern is deformation of the sheetmetal. Surely that's not normal.
What can I do to stop this from occurring.

What have some of you guys done.

Looks pretty typical to me.  1.) No, the washers aren't necessary but I doubt they'll cause any problems.  2.) A little deformation of the sheet metal is not unusual.  I think you will find that when the strips are in place the effect is minimized.  When the baggage door is closed the sandwich of sheetmetal flattens out nicely.

One thing I did that worked out well was to dimple the rivet holes and install the rivets with a flat nosepiece.  The result was countersunk rivets that didn't interfere at all with the mating of the two surfaces.

I used quarter turn or camlock fasteners that are countersunk to the baggage door.

Little different look and installation, same function.                                                          Jerry

I did not put a washer under the rivet and my Dzus springs are still in place after 6 years of flying.  No deformation that would prevent a flat door closure.  See a few pictures below.  I didn't dimple mine like Tim did, but he is smarter than me like that. :)
