I am getting ready to install the (CH601-HD) landing gear.

The steel struts need some coating for corrosion protection.

I looked a chrome plating, but the cost is a bit too much (close to CA$500, including treatment against embrittlement).

I saw comments about a 2 part epoxy aerosol, but it seems to be (1) hard to find and (2) pricey...

(Rust-Oleum Vk9300 System 2K Epoxy)

There's the possibility of powder coating it... I expect the price would be more reasonable than plating.

Any suggestions? (I do not have a compressor, so spray painting is limited to aerosol cans).

don't know about the availibility in Canada, but Eastwood offers the 2 part epoxy in aerosol here in the US if that is the route you decide on. Dan.

Powder-coating is the way to go on these.

Or, you can paint but forget about aerosol stuff without a mixed in hardener.

I had mine powder coated in Port Huron Michigan for less than $100 US..

I also went with powder coating. Doesn't cost much and lasts for years to come.

We decided to to paint all steel parts with a good epoxy primer an top coat. We then rinsed all accessible cavities's with SEM 39574 Rust Preventer Cavity Wax.

The reasons why we decided against powder coating were that it can't be repaired, that the bond with the metal is not as strong as with an epoxy primer what makes it easier for rust to creep under it and that it also adds quite a bit of thickness, what can be problematic in some areas.

Personally, I would only powder coat parts, where wear is a bigger concern than corrosion, like the rudder pedals.

Thank you all for your comments, much appreciated.

I still haven't decided, but I have already powder coated some parts (canopy frame, pedals, firewall), so I know how tough the material is.

I am leaning that way, unless I find someone nearby that can do the painting for me.

Carlos

It's been a while since I purchased any and I know it costs more than paint. The product is made by POR 15 chassis coat black in a spray can. It's tough and coats very smoothly.  7 years on my motorcycle forks and looks as good as the day I painted them. I used this on parts that I didn't want to powder coat.

Thanks for the tip, Charles
