The kids gave me a GoPro Hero 5 Black for Christmas.  I mounted it above and behind the seats in the STOL 750 and used a case that could accommodate a neutral density filter to cancel the rolling-shutter effect that makes the prop looks weird.

I took some videos yesterday, and the playback is beautiful on the GoPro and on my Android phone using the GoPro app.  HOWEVER, apparently GoPro only supplies and supports software for playing their videos on Windows 10 computers and have taken down and don't support the older software for Windows 7 (which I have!).

If I try to play the same raw, unedited mp4 files on my PC with either Windows Media Player or VLC Media Player, I get a distorted (you can make out the image but it is very pixelated and has an overall green color) video playback but has good audio.  I suspect this has something to do with the GoPro settings when the files were recorded?

I also downloaded VSDC Video Editor (free version), and it plays the exact same video files perfectly on my computer.

Can someone who has been there/done that give me recommended GoPro settings for resolution, frame rate, etc. for aviation videos that will be compatible with the Windows and VLC Media Players and/or settings or adjustments to these players if that's what necessary?

Thanks,

John

Happy New Year John,

I have a Hero 3 and 4 that I use.  I think the settings are 1080 @ 30fps and Narrow.  I also have a Windows 7 system with Quik and Studio apps from GoPro.  The GoPro site only offers them for Windows 10 now.  But I searched on the GoPro Hub and found this:

"Re: Quik Desktop for Windows 7?

Google GoPro_Quik-WinInstaller-2.3.0.5383 and GoProStudioPC-2.5.4.404 and you'll find them both.

Or you may wish to google GoProStudioPC-2.5.9.2658 and you'll find the latest windows 7 application for GoPro Studio."

I have some success with these, but have never tried any other apps.

Jeff

Thanks for the info, Jeff! I'll explore your settings and suggestions and see how that works out.  I did find that once I imported my files to VSDC Video Editor and exported them out again, my Windows Media Player and VLC Media Player seemed to play them OK.

Happy New Year!

John

Update: I just shot a little video with your suggested settings and it played back the raw files perfectly with both Windows and VLC Media Players!  Thanks, Jeff!

I want to see that video John, let us know if you post it up!
