The FAA site states that the FAA will not inspect your Amateur Built aircraft until it is registered and registration is recommended 60-120 days prior to your anticipated finish date.
How does the FAA determine that you are the builder and that you have met the majority build requirements?

Interesting experience, Steven; At least aside from the initial hassles, sounds like it was pretty straight-forward. For my first build, my DAR had a letter he provided to builders saying he recommended the repairman certificate. Since he was retired FAA and his name was known, I have no idea if that lessened things or not. My experience was just like the others: bring log and paperwork, walk out with the certificate. This was North Texas FSDO by the way.

Well I certainly am glad I got the DAR and Birmingham, AL FSDO person I dealt with for my repairman certificate.  Very straightforward and reasonable process.
Anyway, Mel can certainly be a wonderful resource to all of here.

Thanks Steven.  Always concerning when you feel like you are being treated differently. Especially when vague language is used to justify that treatment.  Good on you for keeping good documentation! Seems like it paid dividends in the end.

Yes, I'm really glad I had all my ducks in a row. I have spoken to folks at AOPA and EAA about my experience and nobody has heard of anything like it, and it worked out ok. Charlie Becker at EAA asked me (at an EAA chapter training event) to send him details and emails and it would get checked into, which I did. Then COVID-19 broke and I never heard back.
