How are you labeling your electrical wires behind the panel?

Mine are currently just handwritten on masking tape, and the area behind my panel is starting to look like a birds nest.  As I finish my wiring, I'd like clean things up as much as practical.

What's worked for other builders...?

Thanks,

Pat

just to add Pat, does anyone have a professional wiring schematic that you would like to share with us?
Print up small labels. Cut the paper and clear shrink wrap the printed paper to the wire. Don't use to much heat or you may discolor the paper. I do this for each end of the wire. Learned this in the Bob Nukols book AeroElectric Connection, http://www.aeroelectric.com/

YMMV
Hi Pat, I used the approach that Ron describes with the clear shrink wrap except that I used a Casio KL-820 Label Maker for the labels. I printed the labels on 6mm wide tape which fit nicely in the clear shrink wrap (see pic at link below). Be sure to label both ends of your wires. This same label maker was handy as it prints on 6mm white on clear label tape which I also used on my panel. regards //Dave

well I thought I included a link and can't see it now .. let's try this:

I found some small zip ties that have a "flag" about 5mm x 10mm suitable for an ultrafine Sharpie handwritten label. They are still legible and have worked well for me. They came from Stein Air;

Get white heat shrink flatten it out and number or label with a fine tip sharpie then shrink it on the wire. Now shrink wrap clear over it and it looks great, writing shrinks and is easily read.
Write wire identification on heat shrink with a sharpy it will work fine after shrinking the writing looks a lot better as well.
you can make it easy by using idents like XPNDR GND, VHFCOM 12V write down on your diagram what ident you use, you might forget, and it makes trouble shooting easy. Clear shrink has a low melting point than white.
Pat, I did the method recommended in AeroElectric and used the Dymo LetraTag to make the labels. It also works great to make labels for the panel, etc. It makes great flag labels for wires and is a better solution in most cases since you can make a label with the wire name twice with spaces in between (radio radio) when you wrap around the wire the name is on both sides. This is very handy.

It's available at Walmart, but here's a link to Amazon.

One nice feature is that there are a number of different tapes, white, clear, metal, etc. and they come in cassettes, so you can change quickly.
