My oil temp is real high.  I'm thinking of adding an oil cooler.  Any ideas?

I've checked into the coolers on Aircraft Spruce.  Pricey.  Is any oil filter adapter for the oil cooler the best way to go?  If you are able to call in the next few days, I can start to order parts.

I would verify that it is actually high or a faulty gage first

Hi John, I agree with Buddy about checking your gauge accuracy, there are a number of approaches to this but I chose to use a pan of vegetable oil on a hot plate along with a known accurate digital thermometer.  I suspended the oil sender unit in the vegetable oil and stabilized the temperature at 220F.  I compared the values at a couple of different temperatures (200F, 220F, and 240F to check gauge linearity) and found I needed to calibrate my MGL PFD to my sender.  Mine was originally reading 50F high!  If your gauge checks out we can move on to some other ideas.  

I have a 7 year MGL unit too. I feel I need to add an oil cooler. The engine is a rebuilt and I don’t want to get it too hot. We are at 7000 feet at KFLY. Any thoughts on installation?

I bought an oil cooler kit off of Amazon, made my own fiberglass shroud to route air from the scat hose over the oil cooler.  I mounted the cooler diagonally to the co-pilot side of the firewall, it barely fit due to the length.  Dropped my oil temp 20-25 degrees.  It was running about 220-230 in the summer, went down to right at 200 with the cooler in 90-95 degree outside temps.  I did have to cut the hose down to length but it’s very easy to do.

Yes.  The 750 is hangered at KFLY which is at 7000 feet.  The density altitude even on a good day for flying can make it difficult to fly and keep the temp down.  I have had 6 initial flights.  They have been okay temp wise  The cooler weather this season of winter makes it much easier to fly and not be too concerned about oil temp.  We put a cooler on the 0-200 and that may have helped, but we have not flown on a hot day yet.  I am trying to find out about putting openings on the cowling and what is a best way to do that.  Thoughts?  If you have ideas we could continue to chat on this forum, or talk on the phone.  Let me know.  John
