The FAA issued its final medical rule today allowing general aviation pilots to fly without holding an FAA medical certificate as long as they meet certain requirements. For more information see: (https://www.faa.gov/news/updates/?newsId=87125).

AOPA's announcement: FAA RELEASES THIRD CLASS MEDICAL REFORM FINAL RULE
Still not sure how I feel about this...
The new rule does nothing for us Light Sport license holders. You have to have passed a 3rd class medical within the last 10 years. Also it retains the "catch 22" - if you take and fail the 3rd class medical, you can no longer fly under Light Sport rules. I would love to upgrade to a GA license, but I can't risk losing all flying privileges due to this stupid catch 22.
While over the past ten years we've focused primarily on two-seat designs that meet the definition of light sport aircraft (max gross weight 1,320 lbs.) for Sport Pilots, the new medical rules will allow many recreational pilots to keep flying much larger airplanes (six people, up to 6,000 lbs).
Let us know what designs you're most interested in:
Four-seat STOL CH 801 sport utility airplane:
Four-seat low wing CH 640 cross country cruiser:
SAM-EX, 1,800 lbs. gross weight
Higher gross CH 750 (STOL or Cruzer)?
Or keep meeting LSA definition for Sport Pilots or develop something completely new? I invite you to share your ideas and comments.
How about an 801 Cruzer? :) I would be interested in a higher gross weight 750 STOL, just be sure to make the changes retrofitable to the original aircraft.
How about an 801 Cruzer? :)
Bingo! That would be a viable alternative to all the 4-seat Cessna and Piper pilots out there who want a new airplane and the ability to customize it exactly as they want without the price tag of certified.

Higher gross 750 would be a welcome change, especially if existing planes could be upgraded! An upgraded 801 would also be welcome!
Amen
For those of us who have private certificates and found the special issuance process onerous (and expensive), this is a breath of fresh air.
I chose to let my SI 3rd class medical expire and to fly as a sport pilot because 90% of the kind of flying I do could be done under the sport pilot rule using a valid driver's license in lieu of a medical certificate, but flying a 172 with more than one passenger was no longer an option.
Since I held a special issuance 3rd class medical certificate after July 15, 2006, this new rule will permit me to do that (fly a 172 or Cherokee) without a medical certificate.
Though I will keep flying my 601xlb, I can fly it at night. Sometimes the limits on cross country is day VFR only under sport pilot rules. I had my 3rd class in the last 10 years and let it lapse hoping this would be the outcome. I know many are unhappy with the 10 year limit. But now we have our foot in the door. It might be easier to make more changes in the future if accident rates remain low. But by being able to fly at night I might be able to complete a cross country in a day.
Bureaucrats thumbing there noses at out elected Congress throughout the whole process.
