Floats leaving the hangar...going South

Time for someone else to enjoy these well crafted and proofed amphib floats. I got three short seasons on them with Sky Turtle and they are going to CT to be mounted on a Legend Cub Would have kept them if they would have worked with the new project.

FYI...Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)

For those of us with older engines and black box ECUs...The TPS is a mechanical rheostat style unit which outputs a voltage signal to the ECU corresponding to throttle position.  It seems that over time the mechanism can develop wear in certain positions (likely from frequent range of use or vibration related to throttle cable routing and attachment to throttle body.)  This can result in a bit of stumble or hesitation in the engine with throttle movement depending on "where" the wear has…See More

Floats off

Sky Turtle transitioned back to conventional landing gear last Friday. Feels like a flying rocketship with 50 degree weather, half tanks of gas and no amphibs hanging underneath. Sadly, only a temporary sensation ;)

Cylinder head woe!!

Submitted for you reading pleasure...Been having gradually increasing CHT on my #4 cylinder over the past two weeks.  Last flight resulted in a immediate return to the airport at minimum throttle to maintain CHT below max limit* (just barely and in a slight descent while setting up for landing.)  *Downside of ECU is that we have no mixture to cool things down with. All this was after trying to isolate/resolve the issue by verifying/troubleshooting probes and a new injector with no improvements…See More

Ray Allen POS-12 wiring

I have the POS-12 laying around so thought I would fabricate mount and linkage to have the position sensor give my Dynon setup a signal for flap position.  The POS-12 is simply a 0-5K resistor pot.  I have 5V and ground wires from the Dynon EMS as well as the general purpose input pin/wire ready to wire to the POS-12.  The POS-12 has three wires; white/blue, white/orange, and white/green.  Th white/green is the signal wire.I cannot find which leads of the POS-12 accept the positive and ground…See More

David, I built my 750 STOL and completed it seven years ago. I live in alaska and some of the legs I fly are 3 hrs long. I am 82 yrs old and get tired. I need an autopilot. I saw a set of brackets on line that you made, Is it possible to buy the brackets and/or kit from you so I can install an auto pilot?  I really appreciate any help that you can give me. Thank you so much.

Morning David

I'm just finalizing my order to Advanced Flight Systems (thought I'd use them as it will speed up installation of the Dynon package considerably).

I believe I read somewhere that you have a "red box" i.e. a fuel flow transducer in your UL engine/Dynon system - as I understand it you need 2 transducers, 1 to the engine and 1 calculating the return flow so the Dynon calculates actual usage.

Anyway, if I install 2 transducers do I need to, or do I want to, install Zenith's fuel gauges in the tanks?

Cheers

Bob

Hi David, I am curious about your UL Engine , what was the problem that you have to change the #3 Cylinder . And how many hours on your Engine. Tks Wayne

David,

You asked what we were seeing with the bad injector.  The above is typical.  #3 cylinder just was "not tracking" with the others.

Digging a little deeper, it is a bit hotter than others at idle (lean, where everything should be very rich), gets even hotter if the power is up only a tiny bit (even leaner), and actually "goes cold" when the power is advanced anywhere above about 1500 RPM, because it gets so lean it is not burning. Too lean for the plugs to ignite.

And... we thought this was a bad injector for a long time.  After chasing down similar problems several times, we came to the conclusion the injectors were fine... that the ECU had an inadequate ground.

Conclusions:

First, check that all EGTs and CHTs "Track" each other in ALL conditions before first flight.

Second, check for very, very, very good grounds in an airplane that is so dependant on electronics. DO NOT count on the frame.  Strap and/or "Star" (i.e. home run wires) everything.

Feel free to ask questions.

P.S. Graphs produced from Dynon logs via custom software that I wrote.  Feel free to send me a log file if you want it graphed.

Hi David. Hey, need to ask you about your experience with the Skytek tank. I talked to Keith at Skytek and watched the Rotax videos and am impressed with the product. Not impressed with the price and not sure about the 1 gal capacity. They say 7 and half minutes at full power for a Rotax engine if you are down to just the header. Assume then for a UL it would be about half that. I plan on a UL350is. I have seen the pics on your installation but do you still think this tank is the way to go?
