CH-601xlb with Viking 130 engine trip to Marion, Iowa (C17)
On 6 July 2018 was able to fly my CH-601 to Marion, Iowa (C17) and back. Got to visit with my younger brother and wife. It was as always a special visit. I’m so lucky to be able do this on a day when his health is good. That is why I enjoy my CH-601 equipped with the Viking 130 engine.
My original engine failed me twice on trying to make this journey.
Have about 91 hours on the Viking 130…
Hi Dick, Well I'm sorry to hear that you broke your 701. I had a somewhat similar thing happen to me several years back. I was testing the Feathers VGs on the leading edge of the wings and underside of the elevator. I had several smooth TO and landings without the slats. They seemed to work as others had experienced. On my last TO, I was about 20 feet in the air when I got slammed from behind by a dust devil. That tail wind took away what lift I had and I started a slow motion stall, into the runway. Its hard to say if the lack of slats contributed to the event or not. I used to be able to hang on the edge with the slats but didn't feel the same with VGs. I regained control of the aircraft just before touchdown. It wasn't pretty but it was OK. I removed the VGs from the wings and put the slats back on. I kept the VGs on the elevator. They make a real difference with elevator authority right down to the touch down. Essential with a heavy engine up front.

I'm so very sorry for not responding to your questions last year Richard. I had a bit of bad luck last summer with weather and a very damaged workshop building. No flying, very little computer time and about 5 month of steady work getting it all rebuilt.
Regarding the Subaru engine in the 701, I use fully synthetic oil for lubrication. This has worked out well. Oil temps push a bit on the high side at 240-250, depending on ambient. Coolant temps run at themostat setting which is 190/195.
Hope you're getting used to this set up. Its a heavy engine for the 701 but with weight rearranged its fine.
Regards
Cam Andres
Hi Richard, here's an option instead of steering rod boots: https://store.skytekaircraft.ca/store/p35/Steering_Rod_Swivels_Assembly_Kit.html#/
Hi richard
i made the boots from siliconized fiberglass fire cloth you can get it at welding supply store .we use it at my shop to protect delicate parts when welding above them like a drop cloth .its very flexable and just wont burn ,i just sewed a offset cone and mouted it to the fire wall with a stainless flange and some pop rivets
Hi,Richard,
I have a web site w/ all my pics. www.rickbeckmanszodiac601xlb.com . I am running a Jabiru 3300 and a Prince P-Tip prop that is 58 X 48. Paint job is my own design and I did all the paint, including the flames. I, also, did the upholstery, panel, etc. I don't mean to sound braggy, just stating the facts. I was determined from the start to do it all myself. Just sayin'...
Hi Richard,
We are putting a Corvair engine with a Warp Drive prop. I am building the plane and my husband Craig is building the engine. I think we will be using the Dynon system. I havent made a decission on that yet.
