Rudder assembly

Warmer temps today permitted me to go out and begin rudder construction. Drilled and clecoed ribs to spar and horn to spar. Now I have to disassemble, debur, apply solvent and rivet. Just ordered solvent from Aircraft Spruce. A very good day!

Project Update - XL in flight test.

After 6 years my XL was certified in July, 2011. As of today (Jan 2012) it is over half way through phase I flight test.  I expect to complete flight test and enter phase II in the Spring.

I had a number of small problems in flight test.  Most of them have been resolved.  The primary issue was engine cooling (Jab 3300).  Other problems included the engine cutting out from a loose carburetor and a flat nose wheel from underinflation and damage to the tube when the tire rotated and…

Builders Log

What are people using for Builders Log these days?  I searched this site for it; there was mention of KitLog Pro about a year ago. Is that still relevant? What about making your own blog or website? ( thru Google for example ) How about good old fashioned paper note book and pictures?

Do the inspectors electronic records or do they want paper?

Rudder Kit

Cracked open the rudder kit this afternoon for a quick inspection of parts. Will hopefully start building Sunday or Monday. Noticed that there were some pieces listed in the exploded parts breakout on the plans that were not on the packing list...75R2-1, 75R2-2, 75R2-8 and 75R2-9. Thinking I need to call Zenith on Tuesday to make sure these pieces are not supposed to be in the kit.

Moved Parts

Yesterday we moved all but the last few parts from the old site, ready to sell the family house (we call it the 'farm - 52 acres with its own runway)  to raise funds, to clear debts and hopefully contribute towards the purchase of floats for the 801... IF you know anybody interested in a unique property in Ghana, please contact me asap...

CH 600 Checklist

I am resurecting a Zenair CH600 that was originally built from plans.  It was in pretty sad shape when I bought the parts, but, is nearly restored.  Does anyone out there have an Aircraft Condition Checklist that is specific to the CH600.  I would like to add anything that may require additional scruteny to the general EAA checklist.  If you have any information, please email me at bobclement46@ameritech.net.  Thanks!

Engine for the STOL CH 801

I bought a Lycoming HIO-360 E1AD. It is turbocharged and will deliver 205 HP to 12,000 feet. It came from a helicopter and I am making the necessary mods for the airplane. I have also converted the single stick to dual controls. Wings are on-Tail will be on in a day or 2. Am looking for some suggestions regarding a constant speed prop.

I am making a cowling so I have the stock Zenair cowling for sale--cheap--also the all-in-one exhaust ,heat muff system

My Nomination For Best Avionics Equipment Supplier - Dynon Avionics

Choosing an avionics supplier is a difficult decision due to some of the great options available to home builders as well as the significant investment in this part of our aircraft.

After extensive research and soul searching, I finally selected the Dynon Skyview system as the basis for my avionics package and am very pleased with the equipment and especially the fantastic customer service I have received from Dynon Avionics.

I wanted to give my kudos to Dynon for coming to my…

Oh yeah, we watched the first of the how to videos from "homebuilt" they mentioned the "aircraft standards " booklet. Does anyone know if this is something that was supose to come with the kit and if not where do you…

Continental O200 baffles

I may be repeating what everyone else already knows, but just in case....

I've priced O200 baffles, and even the units built by other than Cessna were pricey, probably due to the FAA paperwork. The cheapest I found were around $800. That's a lot of money for a little aluminum, and a bit of seal.

Whilst browsing through my library, I happened to scan my copy of the late Tony Bingelis' "Firewall Forward." Inside, I found a scalable pattern for O-200…

flying today

I flew to another airport for the first time today.  Managed to get enough courage to leave home airport (kmic) by myself.   Used gps from Microsoft flight simulator to get right heading.  It worked, I ended up about 3/4 mile north of Buffalo airport.  Seen alot of people out on lakes with very thin ice (looked black from the air).  Go to store and buy fish, or fall through thin ice and freeze to death?  Its a toss up.

Make a Wind-shield Faring - 701, 750 or 801

Suzy Patey is responsible for the following challenges in Ghana.  Thank you Suzy...

You see, SHE pasted nice pictures of a windshield fairing on her 801.  Our girls told me that our 'silicon putty windshield seal looked ugly'.  So, I told them 'If you can do better - go do!'.... and they did.

When we teach the girls here in Ghana, they have to…

Santa provides logistical inspiration to 701...

In Ghana, Santa has been giving inspirations to the CH701 building ladies of WAASPS and Medicine on the Move.

Consideration was given to renaming the the aircraft as 'Metal Sleigh', for, afterall, both the Wooden Sleigh of the red-coated-white-bearded aviator (Reindeer powered, of course), have great similiarities....

1. STOL capabilities - both…
