Flying the SAM Aircraft for the first time

Since announcing that we'd purchased the assets of SAM Aircraft earlier this year, Zenith Aircraft demo pilot Roger Dubbert and I recently traveled to Zenair Ltd. in Midland, Ontario, Canada to fly the prototype aircraft (that my brother Nicholas had previously flown back from Quebec). The purpose of…

Homemade Tucking Forks

A homemade set of tucking forks for fluting parts. While I have used this on only two parts, I like the control these give me over creating flutes compared to the fluting pliers I have used for just about everything else.…

750 Seat Upholstery Part 4 Accessories

After I melted part of one of the seat covers, I had to order an additional yard of material to complete the repairs.  The repairs took only a couple of small pieces so I was left with lots of extra material for some more upholstery projects.

When I leave my home base for other airports, I like to carry my tow bar for easy maneuvering and parking.  It is a long clunky piece and there is not a good place to stow it.  I decided to use some of the extra material and pleating…

Aero Friedrichshafen 20-23 April

We are currently getting spooled up for Aero Friedrichshafen on the 20-23 April.

We plan to have a stand set up with a huge selection of our available materials as well as some good examples of our work.

In addition, we have a 1:1 mock cockpit of a 650 XL with a beautiful interior that we will have on display.

If you are in the area come and stop by.…

Weeks 3 & 4 - The Progress Continues

I've been a bit slow to add updates here.  Not because progress hasn't been made on the EAA Chapter 245 CH750 Cruzer project, but because I've been working away in my basement workshop on my personal aircraft build project.

Our Cruzer continues to take shape in our EAA Chapter hangar.  While we're waiting for some parts (fuselage longerons in particular) we continue to soldier on, cleaning up details on parts already assembled and applying chromate primer to mating parts…

EAA Chapters & Schools Building Together

Some people say they have been involved in aviation for as long as they can remember. Wouldn't it be great to be involved in something that would help give today's children the opportunity to say the same thing in the future? Some schools are doing just that by partnering with their local…

750 Seat Upholstery Part 3 Harness

There are several forum topics in the 750 STOL area about seat belts and 4 or 5 point harnesses.  So far I have seen three different ways of upgrading to the 4 or 5 point harness from the stock over the shoulder seat belts.  Joe Harrington has posted pictures of his installation using a cable attached behind the baggage back wall and John Austin has posted pictures of his installation using a welded tube running from the existing shoulder belt tabs.  Both of these types of installation are…

Sebring 2016

Here are a few photos and videos of the trip to and from the Sebring U.S. Sport Aviation Expo, January 20 - 23, 2016, in Sebring (central Florida).

For us, the trip itself is usually the highlight of attending these shows, and the trip allows us to spend quality time flying the planes that we spend our days building, and allows us to experience first-hand the cross-country capability of our fun light airplanes. (To this…

750 Seat Upholstery Part 2

I later added a Velcro strap to hold headsets.  Seat cushions are positioned in the seat pan with Velcro also.

As with all my fabrication, I had it Cat scanned to be sure there were no defects.…

750 Seat Upholstery

I have been flying for several years with just some Noral seat cushions from Aircraft Spruce.  The 3” seat bottom was okay but the 2” back was always slipping between the back support bars.  I ended up adding a stadium cushion and a lumbar pad without much better results.  After reading several of the seat discussions on the forums, I decided to build my own upholstered seats.  As usual, I studied the work of my hero, John Austin, and copied his and others’ seats.  But in this…

PAINT SCHEMES

Years ago there was a picture of a flat black 750 with 2 IPADS on the IP. Does anyone know where I could find that picture? Im looking at paint schemes. It had a serious black helicopter Area51 look to it.

A Forehead Slapping Moment That May Save You Frustration

I have spent the past five months tracking down a strange problem. It was a problem that confused me, A&Ps, and lots of very smart people.

It was a problem that sent me down a path of inspections, repairs, experimentation, and lots of test flying.

It was a problem that was ultimately solved by two cents with of zipties.

When I pulled back the throttle on my 912ULS powered (550 hours on the engine) 701, the engine would start to get rough around…

Swept angle jig for fuselage bulkhead form

Some pics of a simple jig for handling the varying angle of the fuselage bulkhead.

At the top the of the form the bevel will be 15 degrees and as it is rotated by 90 degrees it will decrease to 0 degrees. This roughly corresponds  to a bent edge of 90 degrees at the top and smoothly changing to  11 degrees open on the side.

The jig is hot glued together and screwed to the form.…

Week Two - EAA Chapter 245 "Gift of Wings" Cruzer

While there are some kit manufacturers, including Zenith, who offer a "two weeks to taxi" builder-assistance program, our EAA Chapter 245 project will take considerably longer than two weeks.  That's perfectly OK as we will benefit from the passage of time as a means by which to season our decisions on major investments such as engine, prop and avionics.  We have not yet made those decisions so the Sunday build sessions give us a terrific opportunity to discuss the merits of each potential…
