Engine Monitoring

In setting up my Gen 4 Jabiru 3300 on my CH750 STOL and doing the test flights in 2021 I was frustrated with the poor charting available from my MGL EMS data files.  I am fairly handy with Excel, but it takes time and effort to move raw data to fancy graphs.  There is also a software that you can buy for you MGL files that looks pretty good, but I found a cheaper solution.  Savvy Aviation has a well-known paid service where they keep track of your engine monitor downloads and evaluate your…See More

EGT Probe Failure

I have had 3 EGT probes fail.  These were the MGL probes, but they are the dirt simple hose clamp and a probe setup that can be found from various engine monitoring suppliers.  Is this common?  I did not expect to to have one failure in 150 hours much less three.  Just wondering if I got a bad run, or if the high temperature environment causes these to fail. THANKSSee More

Tachometer Sensor

There have been several posts about how to get RPM readings from the Jabiru.  On my Gen 4 engine with MGL avionics I have had good luck with a standard 10 MM proximity switch (sensor).  The key is getting a bracket to put the sensor within about 2mm of the passing magnets and setting the system to 2 impulses per rotation.  My sensor is a TAIS brand from Amazon Taiss 1PCS NJK-5002C NPN…See More

Weight of Paint

We teach a few groups of kids about airplanes each year and part of the discussion is always the four forces of flight and later some airplane tours.  My airplane is not painted and I always tell them that paint adds weight.  Does anyone have a before paint and after paint weight of their Zenith?  For this purpose model does not matter, just looking for a reasonable number for our students.THANKSSee More

Jabiru oil pressure on MGL Avionics

I have the Jabiru 3300 with an MGL avionics EMS.  I have not had a first start on the engine yet, but all wiring is complete.  I have removed a spark plug from each cylinder and cranked the engine to verify the instrumentation.  My RPM's indicate, but I am not seeing any oil pressure indication.  What would be normal while cranking?  Does anyone know what setting to use in the MGL EMS for the standard Jabiru Oil Pressure sensor? All other instrumentation from the engine is working.  Once I get…See More

Jabiru Engine Stand

These pictures are from earlier in the year when our internet was not good enough to post pictures.  The Jabiru engine is shipped upside down in the box and the recommended removal is to turn the box over and drop it out.  Unfortunately it is not flat on the bottom and I wanted to put it on my rolling bench while I installed the engine mount and got it ready to attache to the firewall. To solve the problem I made a custom engine stand.  Pretty simple materials and it worked great.  If anyone…See More

Jabiru Engine Mount Bushings

For some background I am installing a Gen 4 Jabiru 3300 in a 750 STOL.  I am using the engine mount cowling and FFW kit from Jabiru USA / Arion Aircraft.  This cowling is the newer version with the square lower opening.  For instructions I have the Jabiru Engine Installation manual from Jabiru in Australia (as available on their website).  I have the Zenith FFW installation manual for Jabiru and the HomeBuilt help video.I installed the engine to the firewall by fitting the mount to the…See More

A completed and flying airplane.

Posted on October 30, 2021 at 6:15am 0 Comments

Inspection was completed on September 23rd and first flight on the 24th.  Currently trying to get as much flight time in the remaining fall flight weather.  Many thanks to all on this forum who have posted their experiences, lessons learned, and especially photos.  Without these resources I would only be half done by now.  I hope to share more of my experiences when the weather gets worse.  I am hoping I can help others they way this community has helped my build.

Work on it daily

It is critical that I work on my airplane every day in order to make progress.  I find that if I have more than 24 hours between sessions it is way too hard to remember where I left the tools !  :-)

Jabiru Gen4 and Arion Aircraft FFW kit

Posted on January 16, 2020 at 5:56pm 4 Comments

I just received my generation 4 engine today.  I also received the firewall forward kit provided by Arion aircraft the US Jabiru dealer.  Everything looks great and it seems to be a very complete kit.  I will post more details at a later date, but the Jabiru engine and FWF kit combined seem to be the cheapest combination after the Viking engine and certainly the cheapest for a new engine.

Arion Aircraft was right next door to Jabiru USA, so I've met them including Nick Otterback, the owner.  It seems to have been a fairly seamless transition from Jab USA (later Jabiru North America) to Arion.  I've spoken to a few people who have done business with them since the transition and it has all been positive!

Thanks, John.

I have the Aeroelectric CD. I can see the requirements, but would feel more comfortable if someone with more knowledge than I have gives exact details.

John:

I noticed your comment on John Austin's flap actuator switch.

I don't know whether you are knowledgeable enough about a problem I have, but here goes:

I am installing  Ray Allen 301 sticks on my Cruzer. There are two issues: the use of two sticks to control a relay, AND in my instance, wanting to use the stick as the switch for the flaps. I can use the relays that come with the sticks for the trim motor as it is of low amperage and grounds through the relay. But, I cannot figure out how to have the stick relay trigger a relay to operate the flaps.

Is this within your knowledge base?
