Prevailing or running torque values on Nylocs?
I’m about to tighten up the flaperon bellcranks in the fuse which are AN5 bolts. I have a small torque wrench that has an internal spring in the handle. I’ve found reference to 100-140 inch/lbs so once I convert it to Newtons that’s a place to start, but I need to add for the Nyloc drag. Would anyone have recommendations, my torque wrench is not ideal at being able to determine the prevailing and/or running drag. Thanks for any wise counsel.

Hi Tony,
Dang if I can remember. I can run a few new AN5s on my bench in the morning and let you know what I find. I have a good dial indicator torque wrench that will allow me to determine at what torque the nut begins to rotate on the bolt. You want it in NM or inch lbs?

Fifteen inch-lbs on a new one, ten in-lbs. on a used one.

Ah,
No sooner did I reply to your previous and the answer appeared. I just checked and the required torque for an AN5 bolt is 100-140 inch/lbs.....I wonder if we took the top number of the range if it would always cater for nylons maybe? With 125 inch/lbs being the average and adding your 15 inch/lbs for the nyloc, there is the 140. Thanks again.

AC 43-13 Chapter 7 there is a short discussion on self-locking nuts. In table 7.2 on page 7-46 there are prevailing torque values for reusing self-locking nuts. That is as close as an answer as I have ever found, short of running a test with a torque wrench that can measure running torque

Hey Scott,
I think its possible to check running torque if you have a needle styled torque wrench, a beam type, but I have a rotary spring in the handle type. I'll have a look at your references and with Jims input, I'm well on the way.
