Drag and Weight Reduction

Go Kart wheels work well for these 701s both on grass and paved runway. These plus slats off for wings (as in the first picture) and spring coil in place of door strut contribute to more economic in-flight fuel consumption.…

701 Heater

Update on the Zenith supplied cabin heater for my 701.  Installed it in December and it works as advertised...actually a little bit better than advertised as I only need about 1/3 heat on days at 30 f outside. A couple of things: I went down to my aircraft supply store...Coop Plumbing section...and found a 45 elbow in black plastic that fit over the  heater firewall tube perfectly.  I then cut a slot in the elbow OD…

Riveting Flaperons

Building the flaperons has been a challange for sure, scratch building, just another tip here which I learnt the hard way. DONT predrill the 3/32 soft rivet holes in the trailing edge, rather complete all riveting, then keeping the flap trailing edge flat, hold a lenght of timber along the trailing edge to press the upper and lower surfaces down straight and then drill and cleco, you will find then the flap comes out 100% straight.Hope to complete the 4th and last flap tonite!

Shipping a CH 701 in a container from Europe to the U.S.

Hi

Just moved to the U.S. and start missing my 701 still sitting in beautiful Switzerland... Planning to ship the airplane to NYC in a container. Any of you experienced in demounting a 701 to fit in a 20 ft container ? Any advise on preparing the engine (Rotax 912 100 hp) for the shipment ?

The tail section is already demounted, I guess there is not much more to do than unmounting the wings and tie down the plane in the container.

Any advise…

DRILLING ANXIETY OVER

Thanks for the comments on drilling fuel tanks.  It turned out to be "no problem."  Used a 2" hole saw and opened the hole to 59mm using a drum sander

DRILLING ANXIETY

I am at the point on my CH 750 where it's time to install the sending unit for the fuel gage.  I admit that I have been putting it off for fear of attacking that beautiful aluminum tank with power tools.  I know you other builders have done it hundreds of times.  I could use any tips on the tools used, keeping debris out of the tank, holding the tank steady, etc.

Thanks for the comments, this is my first airplane project.

I got a few hours in this weekend

Since I got the rudder I have tried to put in a few hours every time I get.  My son and me have got the skeleton part of the rudder together, now we need to take it apart to debur the drill holes.  I called Zenith, because I did not know how much to debur, if I should get it smoth or just the metal shaving off.  They told me to get it smooth.

My only complaint is I cant get enough time to put into the project.  My wife tells me I building it too fast, we will have to order…

Brake Fluid Selection

I've finally finished running the brake lines and would like to know what type of brake fluid to use.  I'm using Matco brake cylinders and matco disk brakes.

I like the idea of non-hydroscopic.. Is that what they mean by DOT 5?

Fitting Flaperon Skin 701

Thouhgt I would pass this on for scratch builders mostly. I had a problem pulling down the top section of the flaperon skin after securing the bottom side of the skin. I left off the hinge brackets till after I had lined up and drill rivet holes. What was happening is the 2 little nose ribs were being distorted and bent as I pulled up the skin with the straps. Quick fix was to insert the wooden form blok back into the nose ribs, pull the skin up tite, mark and drill rivets holes. Now when…

Rivet Removal

I recently have had to do some repair /replace work and I have had to do a lot of rivet removal.

I thought I would share a little info on this subject

Most  of the rivets on Zenith Aircraft are the Avex blind rivets .  A4 or A5 in size

I have found that the A5 are a little easier to remove that the A4s.

You just want to remove the head and not try to dill it all the way out . Most of the time when you remove the head the reat of the rivet will easilly…

Header Tank

In our line of operations we often experience a lot of turbulence at low level (we are approved to operate below 500' for aerial dispersal and supply drops).  We also get some long, at times fast, descents.  With this combination of events we have decided that we really want a header tank for a variety of reasons...  We have simulated 'uncovered ports' in ground tests, and do not like the VERY unlikely possibility that it could cause.  By taking the 'Tee'ing of tanks to a low point 'air…

Priming the Elevator

Spent a rare relatively warm January Sunday afternoon disassembling, deburring and priming the CH 750 elevator. Still a few hours left and hope to complete tomorrow. This is the first project work I've done since before the holidays. Felt great to be working on it again!
