Reinstalling the Wing Root Skins on a 701

Although several years ago, I recollect that the wing root skins when clecoed to the uninstalled wings looked pretty smooth and unbuckled,  a tough job but nicely executed.

Now as I try to install the wing root skins w the wings on the plane,  trimming to clear the skylight per the plans and manual. It seems no matter which way I start clecoing them on, I cannot get away from having a stressed, buckled wrinkled mess (and thats just me). I keep coming back to: Am I sure this is…

601 XLB - top rudder hinge rivets loose.

601-XLB - 600 hrs - top rudder hinge rivets loose. Noticed a bit of play lately - barely noticeable by pushing up on the bottom of the rudder at the tip. I thought it was a bit of wear at the hinge bolt. It seemed much worse today. Just took a closer look and the rivets holding the top hinge to the rudder are loose - noticeable movement between the two.  Red X - Code 3 - Grounded.

So now the rudder needs to come off - I think.  Wondering if I can replace the rivets without…

Vertical fin complete

I suppose I should start posting some updates on my blog.

Last November I ordered the vertical fin.  I've been saving up for the tail kit, but I got a little impatient and wanted to practice my skills from the rudder workshop in September.  The fin is normally part of the fuselage kit, but there is no reason it can't be ordered and assembled after the rudder.…

Putin's pigs left

Russians left over 30 bullets in my hangar, before they pulled the door with BTR. It looks like they tried to start the airplane with prop covers on. Luckily they left it alone with no damage. They took lots of tools, ATV, car, tv and pillows from our cottage. But they showed no interest in aviation souvenirs to bring back to Siberia.      …

750 STOL scratch builder's aluminum takeoff spreadsheet

Hello folks,

I have found a supplier in Surrey, B.C. willing to help source the aluminum. Metal Mart in Port Kells may be a key ally in the hunt for sheet goods. For contact info, feel free to email me here.

I don't know if it has already been done before but I am compiling a spreadsheet takeoff of all the aluminum (and steel) required for the construction of the 750 STOL. I can't guarantee its accuracy other than to say I will be ordering from this.

I am also using a…

Has anybody put a variable pitch prop on a ch601 hds, I am thinking of a Woodcomp SR3000, but I would like to know if anybody has already done it. What improvements were there ? How did it effect the C of G, anybody in the UK done it and passed it with the LAA. Any help appreciated.

Stepping in

Hello all,

So plans should arrive this week for a STOL 750. My son and I have made a family pact to build this aircraft over the next 5 or 6 years while he goes through air cadets. The finished craft will be his reward for getting his PPL.

We are both very excited to scratch build and kit build as the finances allow. I'm a shipwright and a journeyman carpenter with a lifetime experience in fabrication in composites, metals and wood. I'm hoping that some skills will benefit an…

New Builders

Just ordered a 750 SD kit.  Delivery May-June 23.  We have received the tail section to get started.  Looking for ideas on building a shop table, size, material, leveling, etc.  Any guidance you can give will be appreciated.  We are a father(Jimmy)/son(Ben) team with no building experience, however, Ben is an A&P and a former IA.  Looking forward to getting started.
