LSA vs. Experimental

I am trying to find out the correct information on this, so if you are just speculating on the correct answer, don't bother. The question is: If a STOL CH750 is licensed as an experimental is it possible to change it back to an LSA or go from LSA to experimental. I have a private license which will allow flying a LSA whereas a LSA license will not allow private privileges (of course).  I heard…

World's Shortest Runway?

World's Shortest Runway?

This is Roger Dulac's runway in Quebec (Canada) that measures 100-feet long (30 metres)  by 12-feet (3.6 metres) wide that he built for his Zenith STOL CH 750 "Sky Jeep" light sport utility kit airplane. The all-metal two-seat airplane is…

Viking Steel Bungee Install question

IMAG0098%20%281%29.jpg

I installed the viking spring system tonight, but had some trouble adjusting it and would like some feedback.  How stiff should the nose wheel be after adjusting tension with the side nuts?

The reason I ask is that i've got mine bottomed out and it still doesn't seem stiff enough to keep the nose gear from hitting the stops on landing.…

A "few" random flying pictures

The other day I decided go through my collection of over 20,000 airplane-related pictures and selected some of my favorites to put on one of my digital picture frames. I chose about 1,000 pictures for the picture frame than, having gone to all that effort, wondered what else to do with the collection. I decided to upload them to my SmugMug website for the enjoyment of my extended family, flying partners and anyone else with a…

Great Kobuk Sand Dunes

Made the trip I've been trying to make before starting the 701 build.  It was a long road but the pay off was worth all the work.  Took off from home airport PAOT, Kotzebue AK, to PAIK Kiana, picking up the Kobuk River and following it to the great sand dunes.  the most northern desert in the world.  Was one of the most  fantastic trips I've made in the 701.  Here are some pictures.  ill add more pics later…

New bungee lasted 17 whole hours.

Snuck an hour of flying in at lunch today...  and had my nose gear bungee break at just 17 hours.   Brand new bungee: I didn't use the bungee that came with my kit due to its age in hopes of avoiding this very thing.  Wasn't a hard landing.  In fact, it broke after hitting a bump while rolling out.  Looks to have broken right where the "hook" at the back of the nose gear leg holds it in place.  Given that this is an area that's almost impossible to see during preflight, i've placed an order…

FAA inspection was today 5/28/2015 and N2701 now has an Airworthiness Certificate

Today was a culmination of 3 years work.  I received the project partially built from a fellow in Canada.  He had done about half the work and I did the rest.  The inspectors from the FAA did a good thorough job.  I have had medical problems the past several years that are not going away so flying is not possible now.  My skills have eroded along with my health.  I haven't decided how to approach the Phase I flights if at all.  I know of a couple of pilots who are capable.  I plan to ask one…

Good afternoon every one.

I am an owner of Zenith CH 701. I have been flying for several years. The flaperon I have is the standard Zenith flaperon that came with the kit. I find the floperon deployment system not a user friendly system. Several times I tried to deploy the flap and it took both hands to deploy. As a result, I have stopped using it. I have seen some in the website with actuator and I like those. Does any one know where I can get a modified flap actuator for the CH…

650B Hinged vs flex hinge ailerons

I would appreciate any comments from pilots who have flown both versions of the hinged ailerons and flex hinged ailerons.

I have flown the flex hinge version and noted that it took real effort to turn (real stiff) compared to my Cherokee 140 which could be turned with essentially finger tip pressure.

One pilot stated the hinged ailerons worked well on the ground but were just as stiff as his prior installed flex hinge in the…

Left wing - bottom skin riveted

Had a little marathon effort last night and got the entire bottom skin riveted.  Remembered to first pop the rivets that sit underneath other objects (eg jury strut brackets), which made it all go smoothly.  Drilled a hole in the tank channel for fuel hose (easier with it out of the structure) and positioned the Savannah fuel tank support before riveting.

Tomorrow I'll ask my wife to assist with flipping the wing.  Then it'll be time for playing around with the tank…
