I need some Rotax advise as my plane is stranded at another airport.
The coolant overflow bottle failed in flight. The first sign was some red fluid in the cockpit a few minutes after take off. At first I thought it was brake fluid.
I noted the EGTs were high, but the CHTs were in range, and the oil temps were slightly high, but not in "the red zone"
A minute later I started smelling something in the cockpit and turned back to the field at reduced…

My Zodiac 601 XL-B has moved past phase one flight testing and handles beautifully! The visibility and flight characteristics are better than I imagined and I have just flown from the test area back to my own (rented) hangar in PGD! I expect to still have a few items that will need attention as I continue to do a pre-flight inspection like it is my first flight each time. Do not take anything for granted. I will be writing an article about the build as well as the expectations that were…

Phase I flight test completed 9/26/2012. Phase II now active, but weather has prevented much flight. The weather around here (Pacific NW rain forest) should clear up around May 2013. I plan to do some real cross country flying at that time.
All problems fixed in Phase I except lack of yaw stability. That seems to be inherent in the design. There is no vertical stabilizer because of the full flying rudder and no portion of the fuselage side is…

I purchased the upgraded Z-750 plans & the instrument panel blank so I could start the project by transferring my avionics and instruments to the panel. This way I can get the project going while I get the shop set up and decide how much scratch building I could or should do?
I am also thinking about going to the rudder workshop and while there purchase some of the tools I will need for the build?

The December 2012 issue of EAA Experimenter has a detailed article on calibrating your airspeed indicator, the latest article is a series on flight testing your homebuilt aircraft by Ed Kolano, a very experienced and knowledable flight test pilot. In the past we have stressed the importance of proper airspeed calibration for your light aircraft.
I encourage all builders, owners and pilots to…

After several attempts of measuring and forming rib molds, and then nose ribs themselves, I finally formed one that I can use to replace the factory rib I damaged some time back. With it on, I have replaced the nose skins and have drilled them out to final size. Should be able to finish pretty soon (which is a relative term since I've been working on the tail since April!). More pictures to follow.

Attached is my weight and balance sheet. Final all up weight with no fuel 695 lbs.
So far I have accumulated 4 hrs. flight time, two of those hours were today.
Alternator failed after 2 hours. Found out the "upgrade" NipponDenso alternator comes standard on Toyota forklifts. Found one in Goldsboro for $90. Had to disassemble and reclock…
