Keeping fuel costs down

I love to fly and have logged 892 hours in 3 and a half years. That’s a lot of fuel.

I have never liked the lead in aviation fuel. It trashes the spark plugs and the engine oil and of course it’s bad for the environment. My 601’s Jabiru 3300 engine does not need the lead.

A few months ago I started burning premium automotive fuel. I bought two plastic 14 gallon fuel tanks from Costco for about $80…

Aerial Drops from the Drop Hatch in CH701

As we progress with our supply drop preparedness in Ghana, we carried out a series of drops this weekend, witnessed by our Civil Aviation Authority.

The dropzone was identified using 6 tyres on a roughly 12m x 12m target. The approach to the drop zone was over the hangar at Kpong airfield, and the target around 40m away from the hangar, simulating a drop to a school playing field or park. 9 cannisters were dropped. 4 x 1kg sand non chuted, 4 x 1kg sand chuted…

We have completed the construction video DVD for building the Zenair Amphibious Float kit! ( HomebuiltHELP )

Product Reviews

We're tying something new at Zenith.aero, a Product Review site that will allow builders to share their actual experience with a specific instrument, system or new idea that has been implemented.

An example would be Dynon's EFIS-D6. A blog will be posted and using Dynon's descripton of the specific product. Those of you that have actually used the system can post your comments. Pros and cons, hours used, airplane that it is installed, price and would you…

It's a bird it's a plane, another Zodiac 601XL leaving the ground

After many obstacles, 417SX departed U76 this afternoon, I should have

waited until tomorrow morning, it was warm today, 91. I decided to do a

high speed taxi to see if the Airspeed Indicator was alive, it was, and

figured that a short flight to test my FWF had come. Taxied back and I

was airborne quickly, remembered to keep the nose down in a cruise

climb, 500 fpm, Airspeed was indicating 120mph and the GPS was giving a

similar reading with the engine turning at… Continue

N 413 GM Zenith 601 XL makes first flight

On august 14th 2010 I made my first flight with my Zenith 601 xl-b. The flight lasted 45 minutes, remaining over the Winsted, Mn airport the entire time. After verifing the temps I continued a slow climb to 4300 feet, where I tested the slow flight abilities of the plane, (I found out the 601 xl can fly much slower than my chase planes). I was indicating 42 mph on the Enigma EFIS with no stall buffet being felt. the flight speeds were kept under 90 mph the entire time. The controls felt…

STOL CH 750: Dual Control Sticks

Frank Tompson recently installed the dual control stick option kit in his STOL CH 750:

We were a little concerned about cabin access (getting in and out of the airplane) with the dual sticks but it appears not to be a problem. Here's a schematic of the system:

The…

Tour de France: ULM-style!

Every year in France, just a few weeks after the massive (and grueling) bicycle-world event, another tour takes place which is much more gentle, low-key, and more fun for us ultralight pilots: le Tour ULM. Organized by the national ultralight association (FFPLUM), this year’s tour included 150 ultralights of every shape, size and make.…

CH701 helps to save C206

Do you remember training for engine failures - PFLs (Practice Forced Landings)? Well, a transit pilot flying over our territory had a real one - with smoke in the cockpit, losing oil pressure and a rough running engine that led him to choose to land on the edge of the Volta Lake, a LONG way from any nearby access roads - he was flying a C206 with a big ol' Continental 300Hp heart up front...and was lucky not to be ten minutes more into the gallery forest...… Continue

Zodiac CH601XL-B Flight Test Report

We recently had the chance to give Steve Flattum the opportunity to test fly our factory demonstrator Zodiac CH 601 XL B (upgraded model). Steve flies for one of the major US airlines and has logged more than 20,000 hours. More importantly though, he has a passion for light aircraft, and he has flown more than 100 types of aircraft (from ultralight to supersonic) and performed more than 20 first flights. He holds a professional pilot degree and is a… Continue
