Undersize Piano Hinge Pin?

Started this discussion. Last reply by John Heather Aug 4, 2022. 4 Replies

Some folks have noted that they used slightly undersized piano hinge wire instead of the standard .089 wire for things like cowl installation.'Spruce only sells the standard wire. If Grainger or…Continue

Suggestions to "Un-Wrinkle" lower windshield gasket?

Started Jul 13, 2022 0 Replies

Hi, All;I installed my windshield in the middle of May. On each side of it where there's sharper bends, the gasket has wrinkled or "bubbled" such that it does not sit flat on the plexi.Aside from…Continue

Got start fixed; now hard to start

sighWell, folks, I had a no start problem that turned out to be the mags installed 90 deg out such that firing order was 3-2-4-1. Got that fixed and it fired right up.HOWEVER.Tried the second start this evening.  Could not get it to start. I HAVE NO PRIMER installed. Had to shoot some starter fluid (ether( into the air filter, then it fired right up and ran great.Should I just pump the snot out of the throttle more? I probably pumped it 5-6 times. Didn't want to flood, but obviously I'm aways…See More

O-200 Won't start, pop, cough, anything...

Very frustrated.I rebuilt my own O-200. I have significant engine building experience from a prior professional life as a Chrysler tech. I also built my own AeroVee VW conversion for my prior plane, a Sonex. I know, I know, it's not the same. One mag was less than 75 hrs when the core became available. I sent the other mag to our local mag shop for 500 hr servicing. The MA-3SPA carb also had less than 75 hrs on it, so I did not send it out for overhaul. I could put 100LL into the fuel bowl,…See More

MA3-SPA Initial Mixture Setting?

Hi, All;I've been trying to get my O-200 to fire up so I can then take the plane to the hangar. However, no joy.I thought I had spark issues, so double-checked the crank/cam timing, firing order from #1 cylinder, plug wire orientation, distributor timing with the mag synch tool, etc.So, I sprayed some starting fluid in the air filter. THAT got some results, so I know that SOMETHING is at lest providing a start. So now I'm concentrating on fuel.Just to make sure, how many turns (?) out from fully…See More

Preferred oil pressure sensor location?

When I stripped down my O-200 for overhaul, the oil pressure line was a port on the passenger side of the crankcase. yet it seems like most folks now refer to add the sensor to the tap location on the oil filter adaptor. does it make a difference?See More

Removing friction lock from throttle cable?

Like many others, I have installed dual throttle cables in my Cruzer.I've seen a few comments about removing the friction lock on the right side cable just to ensure that the cable isn't locked when you need it most.So....HOW do you remove/disable the friction lock? Standard McFarlane cable....Update: duh...called McFarlane; all one does is remove the black knob, then unthread the knurled lock knob and remove the leather packing material jammed in there. Reinstall the lock and plastic knobs and…See More

Source for carb heat box locking stud and cross pins

I'm finishing-up the connection of FWF wires etc to my O-200 Cruzer.I purchased the Zenith FWF kit, which came with everything.I had a heckuva time installing the tiny cross pins into the bottom of the air filter mount studs.  I'm talking the studs you push thru the filter and gasket and act like a dzus to hold everything onto the sheetmetal carb heat airbox/valve.  These are TCM parts - 28306 and 28308. Spruce has 'em, but they're priced at $60 for ONE stud and $32 for ONE tiny little cross…See More

Any Zenith folks staying in Sleepy Hollow in the next few weeks?

Hi, All;I was just curious if any Zenith folks were going to be RV'ing it (4 wheel kind) at Oshkosh this year and staying at the Sleepy Hollow campground.Ulterior motive is to perhaps hitch a ride to the Zenith banquet. But, of course, we'd love to just sit and chat over a few cold ones as well!See More

O-200 Starter Mount Bolts

Hi, All;Has anyone found a source for the upper starter mount bolts? The 5/16-16 x 3 5/8" bolts?I have the ones that came out of my core, but there's no head stampings, etc., to let me know how good they are. A standard AN5-32A bolt is a -24 thread, and the accessory case is a -16.  As in, I don't know if the past rebuild shop just went down to Lowes and got a 5/16" bolt out of the parts bin.....See More

Exhaust Port Gaskets

Hi, All;I'm close to completing my O-200 rebuild. I noticed in the Superior overhaul gasket set that I received EIGHT exhaust port stamped metal gaskets. Is this something that I should know about? TWO gaskets per cylinder / exhaust port? They were dead-nuts on with everything else, so I'm thinking I'm missing some information.ALSO:  Do you apply sealant to the magneto mounting gaskets? Wouldn't think so, since timing is checked and adjusted at condition inspection, etc.See More

Looking for "thick" black tape

Sorry, folks; I don't know any other way to describe it.On my previous build 10 years ago, I happened upon a roll of tape that looked just like a roll of electrical tape. The interesting point is, it was about 1/32" thick, about 2-3x the thickness of regular tape.It was GREAT for wrapping around the motor mount where I was going to affix a zip tie to keep the tie from abrading the mount tubes. However, I can't find it now. Is anyone familiar with what I describe and can offer a brand/trade hame?See More

How to tell if a 601XL had the "B" mods done?

Hi, All;As some of you know, I'm currently building a Cruzer, so aside from saying "it's a low-wing", I really have no knowledge on the 601 airframe. One of our EAA Chapter members (I'm a Tech Counselor) asked if I knew any way to determine for sure if the "B" mods were done to an airframe or not. One came up for sale and he's interested. He doesn't want to rely on the logs.Is there any VISIBLE checks I can do to tell if it's been modified? Properly? Thanks for any guidance...See More

Tips for O-200 Assembly?

Hi, all;I'm getting ready to finally start assembling my O-200 when some final parts come in.First a little background: In a former life, I was a professional wrench for a Chrysler Plymouth dealer in the 70's. The days of Hemi 'Cudas, RoadRunners, GTX, etc. I've overhauled more auto engines than I can recall. I also built an AeroVee (VW) for my Sonex a few years ago.  I'm comfortable with tools.Just looking for tips on some of the O-200/TCM subtleties. Any sequence issues I should watch out…See More

Has Anyone Wired a Garmin 327 XPNDR?

I applied power today for the first time; no smoke!  Most stuff worked; that which didn't are relatively simple items.  One is the transponder. It works just fine - as much as I can tell without it being interrogated. However, power application has been messed up. Part of this was because I had to make a judgement call on which power connection did what.I've enclosed a very lousy, unreadable image of the wiring page from the instruction manual. This is more to jog your memory if you *have* done…See More

Normal Battery discharge pattern?

Hi, All;I posted this on the Zenith Builders FB page, but the only info offered was that I bought a cheap battery and I should go with Odyssey.I installed a Powersonic battery in my Cruzer, the model number as spec'd in the Zenith plans. Always follow the plans, right?!?   ;-)I'm not yet flying. I have not even connected the battery to the airframe/avionics yet.As I'm getting real close to finishing my wiring and connecting the battery, I thought that it's been a few months since I received the…See More

Hi Carl

Welcome to the Zenith family! I see in your profile that you are planning for the Cruzer. The Cruzer is a fantastic plane! If you get up to the factory, a demo ride will be in order. My wife (Sharlene) and I were there in June for 3 days and we were VERY impressed! We found all the folks at Zenith to be warm, friendly and honest. Not once did we see any kind of sales pitch...their business model is one that relies on the reputation of the product they produce. They were having an Open House while we were there so we had a chance to speak with quite a few of their customers (builders). We were amazed to find that many of them were building their second or more Zenith kits...quite a feat for an industry that sees new companies come and go so frequently!

We are heading back up to the factory in September for their 25th anniversary bash and will be bringing back more of the CH 750 STOL kit. Hopefully, we will see you there!

Ken and Sharlene
