Tire bead breaker for Matco wheels

All my Carlisle Turf Glide tires are 12 years old now and they’ve held up well and show no signs of impending failure, but I decided 12 years is long enough.  One of the things I dread is breaking…Continue

Whirlwind propellers sold to Hartzell

Got an email today telling me effective 1 September my next phone call to Whirlwind will be routed to Piqua, Ohio, home of Hartzell propellers and its newest acquisition, Whirlwind propellers. All manufacturing and management will now be in Ohio. I imagine they’re clearing their desks out back in California. Oh, and also effective 1 September buying anything from Hartzell for my Whirlwind prop using my credit card will cost more. Yay!See More

Five Year Rubber Service Rotax 912

Just finished Subject. Want to share my thoughts and if anyone needs a purchase list I have one for a 701. I will add to this a bit at a time but my opening remark is WOW it’s a lot of work and money. And when you’re done, the airplane doesn’t look any different.  Took me about three weeks to do the work and a couple months of planning and ordering stuff. Yikes. But like most things there were good and bad to be had. See More

Tire bead breaker for Matco wheels

All my Carlisle Turf Glide tires are 12 years old now and they’ve held up well and show no signs of impending failure, but I decided 12 years is long enough.  One of the things I dread is breaking the bead. Can’t pry against the Matco wheel rims, that would damage them for sure. I’ve done the pieces of wood and ratchet strap thing and although it works I don’t want to ever do that again.  I found this tool and love its simplicity, and it’s made in the USA. Chuck it in my drill press and pull.…See More

Bing 64 carb leak

Zenith 701 with a 190 hour 912UL. In service now 4 1/2 years. Opened the hangar door last week and noticed fuel spots around the front tire. Airplane had been sitting about a week since last flight. Source was the carb on the 1/3 cylinder side. Fuel was slowly dripping from the K&N air filter and dripping down to the muffler then down the nose strut. Removed the filter and had fuel seeping from the idle air jet and needle jet air tube. The carb on the other side was dry. Wing tanks had…See More

If Adventure Pilot has a booth at Sun n Fun

And you happen to be there, please ask if their support for the iFly 740 series is soon to be discontinued. Just a premonition I have based upon their emailer sent out today offering current 740/740b owners a trade in credit for their EFB tablet. Hopefully they will support the 740 devices for years to come.See More

Flightline 760 discontinued

What? Why? Dang! It’s a great, lightweight, affordable little radio with built in VoX intercom and I discovered today they’ve been discontinued. I bought one new five years ago for $750 from Spruce.  I was at 1,000 agl yesterday chatting with another aircraft in the pattern of an airport 85 miles away.  All I can say is I’m glad I bought mine when I did and I feel for anyone looking for one for their new build. They are perfect for a two-place experimental aircraft.  Closest thing Spruce offers…See More

One of those Unforgettable moments

Happened to me yesterday afternoon. Around five o’clock I’m standing in the kitchen. The weather has been wonderful for late October so the windows are open. I hear a muted rumbling noise. Probably a Harley out on the nearby county road I thought, someone enjoying a ride on a pleasant Alabama afternoon. But as it grows louder it begins to sound more like an airplane. A large airplane. A large old airplane. Those are radial aircraft engines, my brain finally realizes. Large, loud, and multiple.…See More

Hi Jim,

Was there some information or advice that finally allowed you to decide on which Rotax engine to use. I believe you are using the 80 hp.

Regards,

Perry
