Joggling cross stiffeners

I have been experimenting the last few weeks trying to figure out how to best create the joggles to go over the .093  longerons on the lower fuselage.

I tried the wood block method given in the zenith cd. I tried  the slotted aluminum sheet method as I had seen on the EAA homebuilder tips videos. I tried a third  method shown in the homebuilt help using a tucking fork and a hammer. I tried my vice. Perhaps it was  just due a lack of skill on my part, but the joggles I got…

New Member, own and fly a Zenair CH300

Hi everbody !  I am a happy Zenair owner /pilot. Two years ago I purchased a Zenair CH300 Tri Z , powered by a Continental 0300 , with warp drive prop. I am a Recreational Pilot, enjoying every minute of flying, talking flying and aircraft topics. Looking forward to building a Zenair 750 STOL, which I intend starting in very near future ( this year)

Well as many of you have seen ,my plane is now flying. I have to give the real pilot credit for first flight .Dave ,who is also my instructor, is flying it during the first flight video. I did go along for the thrill and the learning experience. It was a blast. The flight went great, just a few minor problems.

Solid Riveting

Well folks, I've made a ton of progress since my last post. I have the cabin sides ready for solid riveting. I'm also ready to start match drilling the wing spar pieces. I've made about 75% of the parts in the plane. About 3 weeks ago, I broke my bending brake trying to bend some longer .063". The pop rivets holding the piano hinge pulled out. So, I thought I'd use the opportunity to practice my solid riveting by repairing the brake with bucked rivets. What a disaster. I simply CANNOT get…

I have a Roy Built, Roy 5th bearing, 100 horse 1965 Corvair. Swinging a 2 blade 72" Prop.

My Aircraft will be slightly slower due to the drag of my STOL type aircraft. So, maybe 75-85 will be

realistic as an expectation. About to finish my fuel tanks this spring and a goal for me is that the wings MUST be on this summer. It was a pleasure to read about this Corvair powered 601. I believe that the Corvair is a real performer, and I…

Long Cross Country puts Corvair to the Test

Flew nearly 1000 miles from Delaware to North and South Carolina and back last week in my 3000cc Corvair powered 601XL and came away with a renewed confidence and appreciation for the combo.

The trip to visit family and attend a conference originated at Eagle Crest Airpark (DE25) in Delaware and included stops in Farmville, VA (KFVX), Morganton, NC (KMRN), Greenville, SC (KGMU), and Spartanburg, SC (KSPA) before heading home.

The 3 liter Corvair engine…

Old Style Trigear Amphib Floats

http://www.zenithair.com/zodiac/pics/6-fl.jpg" />

Does anyone have a set of the older style CH701 / CH601HD Zenith / CZAW floats?

I'm bored these days without a project, so I'm thinking my CH601HD would be cool to fly on floats. Anyone have a drawing for the front steerable nose gear. If I remember these were compressed air…

Fuel Tank Testing

I am at the point of needing to test my fuel tank. I have read where some people have used water, and others have used gasoline.  Any thoughts on this?

+1 for the Philadelphia FSDO

Finally got around to setting an appointment at the Philadelphia FSDO to get my repairman certificate.  The examiner there was very friendly and excited to be able to learn more about homebuilding.  In fact, we talked for nearly an hour and a half because he was enjoying looking at all the photos and videos I brought.  After all the certificated pilots I've met who take a step backwards and give the 'crazy-eye' look  and then go on to say how they would never fly in an experimental aircraft,…

STOL CH 701 Main Spring Gear Inspection / Polyurethane Rubber

Here's a brief overview of the pre-flight of the main spring gear of the Zenith STOL CH 701 - to make sure that the aluminum spring gear is properly tightened between the two polyurethane spacers (on both sides).  This is a quick and easy item to check for regularly (and especially after a rough landing):

Older STOL CH701's used pieces of…

Panel Hack Saw

A panel hack saw is a special kind of hacksaw that uses a spring steel sheet as a back to support a standard hacksaw blade. This allows the saw to make long cuts in metal where a normal hack saw would be stopped by the bar.

When I first found out about them I wanted to buy one, but no one seems to make them anymore. So I had to make one of my own.The spring steel is .032 sheet and the hacksaw blade is a standard blade.

The saw can be a little tricky to use.  The…

750 Seat Upholstery Part 4 Accessories

After I melted part of one of the seat covers, I had to order an additional yard of material to complete the repairs.  The repairs took only a couple of small pieces so I was left with lots of extra material for some more upholstery projects.

When I leave my home base for other airports, I like to carry my tow bar for easy maneuvering and parking.  It is a long clunky piece and there is not a good place to stow it.  I decided to use some of the extra material and pleating…
