Right tip done

Completed the right tip.  I've decided not to install lights, as far as I know they're not required for RAAus rego and I don't plan to fly at dusk.  In any case, I can always make an access point in the tip later if required.

Really don't know why they didn't make the entire tip out of plastic, it would have been much easier to install than a separate nose tip!…

Spar Web Doubler

Cut out the spar web doubler today. Used a dremel saw and smaller dremel tool to do the cuts on the .063 thickness aluminum. Went through a number of cutting wheels!! Also measured and cut out the upper and lower spar caps. Now I need to find a bending brake to take care of the 90 degree bends for the spar tips and doubler. Maybe I can build one.

bottle nose root ribs?

Root nose rib 75-w-4-1 drawn out does not match to root rear rib 75-w-4-2

if I where to make the nose rib x=0 and y=90 instead of 80, and do the same to the rear root rib, it would look more like the drawing of the nose and rear rib together, on pg 75-wa-1

Any suggestions…

Wing progress

Last week I disassembled the wing, deburred everything and primed the joint surfaces.

I decided to rivet the rear structure - rear spars to rear ribs, rear strut bracket etc - but not to rivet the ribs to the main spar at this stage, in case any shims were needed to pack out the nose ribs.

Riveted the lower trailing edges and lower rear skin to the framework, turned the wing over (carefully!) and clecoed the nose ribs back on.

This week I clecoed the nose skin…

More CH750 Spar Work

Another decent weekend and I was able to get out in the garage. Got the lightning holes drilled for the spar. Also got the spar tip and the spar root doubler cut. Finally, I was able to draw the pattern for the spar web doubler. I expect I will have to machine cut it. I bought some cutting wheels for my dremel tool. Will see if I can do a rough cut with it and then file it down to specifications.

GoPro wing mount

Has anyone attached a GoPro camera to the wing of a 601 XL? I am looking at ways of doing this - I hear the 3m adhesive mount will be strong enough but it would probably take off the paint when trying to remove it at a later date. Any advice?

Short Take-Off and Landing in the Pacific aboard the USS Carl Vinson

Last week I had the the privilege of visiting a working U.S. Navy carrier out at sea as part of an EAA group. Fifteen of us were given a first-hand look at life aboard an aircraft carrier and Navy life at sea.  This was truly a unique and unforgettable experience.

We started the trip with a night at the historic…

Wing Spar Work Continues - CH 750

After realizing that I cut the original wing spar form from the wrong thickness metal, I was able to take advantage of a warm Saturday to cut a new form with the correct stock. I was able to use the original stock as a guide as I cut the form with an Olfa knife. It wasn't easy but I got a straight and clean cut. The form in the photos look ragged but I left the protective coating on.

Fuel system help

If anybody could help I would appreciate it.

My 750 is nearly complete at as a kit.  When I built the wings I ran the supply fuel lines at the lower fitting and the vent line to the fuel tank on the opposite side on top of the tank. At the time I didn’t consider what type of engine I was going to install. Now that I have decided to install a fuel injected engine, I realize that I need use the vent lines I ran  for the return of the fuel to the tanks. But because there are only two…

Wing Ribs Complete

Yesterday I finished the last of the wing ribs. All nose, rear, root and flaperon ribs are done and I have cut material to form flaperon spars, rear wing channels and cut material for the wing spars.

Question, I wanted to post this as a status as many do but I don't know how.  Can anyone teach an old dog a new trick --thanks.

firewall Boots 701

Is there some type of boot for the two threaded rods that control the front nose wheel? Trying to keep engine compartment smells from entering the cabin area.

Thanks Santa!

A while ago I bought a set of wheels and brakes off a crashed Savannah.  The seller was in Adelaide, so I asked a bloke who lives nearby and who bought the engine from the same plane to pick them up for me.  The seller told me he'd throw in any other Savannah bits in the hangar.

Well, he delivered them today, and not just the wheels - but the main gear, the nosewheel fork, the rudder pedals with toe brakes and master cylinders, the flaperon mixer, Y-stick... and…

New Year, New Start

After taking a several month break (mostly to gather monies for materials to go forward) I’m back.  I have resolved my immediate problem of having to wait to purchase materials at least to carry me through the airframe stage.  That said, in the process of getting my act together I purchased a set of plans for the Ch 750.

Yeah I know, but these STOL guys just seem to be having so much fun.   I will be placing an order for materials this week to scratch build my 750.  Hope to be able…
