Cowling Final fit

I received the cowing from the paint shop and fitted it to the fuselage in order to be able to arrange the fitting of The airbrush work to be done on the cowling. With the cowing in place the fiberglass work over the added metal strips has pulled away and needs to be attended to before I can finish the paint job. This is the bust for being able to have the plane at Oshkosh.…

July 8 Progress Made on Tail Kit

A little more progress made today; check back shortly for slides.



The first operation I did today was to make sure that the tips of the horizontal stab's full ribs, which eminate from the rear spar and flush up against the forward spar at its ends, and the small nose rib were coplanar. July 6 Work on Tail Kit

Lots of progress made on the horizontal stab today.



Today's progress consisted of five small but separate operations:



- Locating and drilling the horizontal stab front mount brackets

- Finishing the holes on the forward spar end brackets

- Locating and drilling holes to attach the upper and lower doubler to the rear spar

- Locating the drilling holes to attach the rear ribs to the rear spar

Plans builders,I need some advice

Hi everyone,I'm plans building a 750 and at the point of making flaperon spars.I built a 9 foot brake out of solid birch and piano hinge.The brake is very strong and dead straight.I clamped in the blank and bent the flanges as per plans,the only problem is when I removed the part it looked like a banana!All I did to fix it was put some small crimps in the flange but I don't feel comfortable doing this.I then tried again but this time I made a form block the correct size and formed using a… Continue

Upgrades already

Well here we are again and this time it is all about an upgrade to the 801. After talking to Larry Landucci and Bill Rewey during the air show I decided to add the flaperon/aileron trim tab. So here we are hard at work making more parts and cutting, fitting, pulling wires etc.etc.etc. you know how it goes. So far all is going according to plan and no hiccups encountered yet. Tail Construction Continues

Today I made more progress on the tail.



First, I placed the upper doubler onto the horizontal stab forward spar and confirmed that the centerline mark on the doubler coincided with the centerline mark on the spar.



Then I clamped the doubler to the spar in four places, and drilled and clecoed the centerline hole.



Then I drilled the holes a good deal to each side of the doubler and clecoed those.

July flight over the Cascades

Yesterday was a holiday for me, so I decided to take a quick loop to the north east of my home airport, Sanderson Field in Shelton WA. I topped off the tanks in my Zodiac 601 XL and warmed up my Jabiru 3300 as I taxied over to runway 23, two mouse clicks sent an email to family and friends telling them that I was taking, and letting them know that they could track my flight with a web based map. Tail Construction Started Today

I started the tail kit today, having picked it up at the factory when I went to do the rudder workshop this past weekend.



First, pieces were inventoried: everything is present in stated quantities.



I started by labeling the horizontal stab front spar with "top" and "fwd/aft," and then placed it on wood strips with the aft side up (this puts the lightening hole flange down).

Canopy propping strut for 601 forward tilt canopy

There has been some discussion of devices to prop open the forward tilting canopy among the group lately so I decided to describe the one I made.





It is a strip of 6061-T6 aluminum 1/8" thick, one inch wide and about 15 inches long. It has been lightened and the last lightening hole is made a little larger than the rest. That one can slip over the canopy latch striker.

Testing larger "bushwheel" tires on the STOL CH 750

Those of you who have visited the Zenith factory lately have noticed the larger bald tires on our STOL CH 750 demonstrator. We've been testing these "off airport" tires this past month and are quite pleased with the results.

Fall River Mills Flyin

Qsp attended a flyin at Fall River Mills last sunday a pancake feed and did they feed us. Eggs cooked to order extra large ham slice great pancakes and a host of freindly flyers. We had two xl's there and our demo 701 stol. Brad Demeo and Steve Smith were the xl owners. The show was over at 2: oclock after departing Steve left to go find more airports that he has not landed at. CH601HD Bungee & Gear Leg Replacement

Well... Yesterday I started into job on the CH601HD that is very much like force feeding a Porcupine to a Grizzly Bear ! I used an ATV jack to lift The Zen, there is no weight the wings... its a "Plan B" thing. Grantley Este & Bob "Mr. GoodWrench" Braden pitched in to get me started on the job I have been putting off for a year now. Changing the out of date main gear bungee (5 yr replacement cycle), so far it has taken 3 guys the better part of a day to jack up the aircraft and get the gear… Continue
