Finishing the cowl

Monday installed the oil dipstick door and did the layup for the box that will hold the wires that lead to the oil pan heater and the battery maintainer, This box will be fiberglassed on the inside of the lower cowl on the right side of the airplane and an access door will be installed also. It appearswe will need to add some rubber gasketing around the base of the cowl for a better fit of the camlocks. Then it is on to finishing the air intakes and baffles to direct the airflow into the intake… Continue

RE: N4882 flying again

I had 19.8 hrs on it. I talked with the Seattle FSDO and they said because I had not yet completed my 1st 40 hrs, they would not need to add additional testing time. I worked about 20 hrs per week for 4 months, but I did all the work alone. Keep plugging along!

N4882 Flys Again!

I have completed two test flights, 0.5 hrs and 1.0 hrs, and it flys perfect, um, just like it did before the upgrade. Still adjusting the alerion trim to get it to fly hands off. Off to re-start my ASI calibrations. It's nice to be back in the air again!

Natfly 2010 at Temora Australia

Hi Everyone

Natfly 2010 at Temora Australia was a great event.

Natfly is the National Fly-in for Recreational Aircraft of Australia (RA Aus) the body that governs aircraft up to 600 Kg in Australia

The change of venue went very well and there is a lot more space for everyone.

Zenair Australia had a site with three 601 XLs on display, they were Peter Franke, Geoff Moore and Allan Barton.

Demo flights where had by builders and people interested in… Continue

The Best Flight of My Life...

Today is the 11th April 2010 - more than 20 years since that first infectious flight in a C150 at Sywell Aerodrome in the UK. I have flown more than 40 types, over cities, countryside, desert, lakes, sea, mountains, forests, rain forests and low level over more hostile terrain than I care to think about. But today was special.

CH701 9G-ZAF, or Alpha Foxtrot was built for the Medicine on the Move flying doctors and nurses project, and she is beautifully…

Well here we are, spring is upon us and we are making progress, the cowling is back from the fiberglass shop and we have fit and installed the camlocks, some we will need to change to a smaller stud, I goofed on the measurement before ordering. left to do now are the two door openings, one for the oil dipstick and the other for the oil pan heater and battery maintainer. flush out and finish the air intakes and the cowl is complete. Have the latest update from Dynon to install, but that is…

750 or 701? Well, both!!

We have been testing and our CH750 with the 97hp UL260i. Flight testing is going well and should be done for our trip to Sun n Fun.

Doing our best to keep it light it has minimal interior, EFIS, Comm, and Xpnder, along with the 159 lb UL260i engine. Empty weight came in at 701.5 lbs, on digital scales, weighed twice. The firewall forward kit is currently available for any of the ULPower engines, 97, 107, 118 and 130hp.…

6-zu-1-1 rivet spacing

^6-zu-1-1 rivet spacing after adding the new piece. I thought I saw something about doubling the rivets out to rib 4. The plans don't indicate that.

Start of a long road...

I bought my aluminium and steel from Performance Metals (NSW) around a year ago, March 2009. Very impressed with the service from Performance Metals - they delivered quickly, the sheets were very well packed, and the Chupa Chups hidden in the package were a pleasant surprise!

After picking up the package from the Hobart docks, I built a set of 5 racks topped with a worktop. The logistics of building racks to hold 12' x 4' sheets, and being able to access them, was…

Upgrade Complete N663F flys again

I finished the upgrade today and logged a .5 flying. I received the kit the middle of Feb so it took 6 weeks to get it together.

Plane flew fine. I need to look at the rudder rigging as it took more effort to keep the ball centered then before. Other then that, it flew like it did before the upgrade.

Upgrade Complete, N554SG Flies!

Well my 601XL upgrade is now complete. The post-upgrade test flight occurred yesterday, March 23, and things went great. The sun was going down so I went up for three quick touch and go’s. The first thing I noticed was no oil can popping noises any more. I only got to 100 MPH so it will be interesting to see if they are gone at high speed also. In my short flight I did not notice any changes…

601XL with O235 Lycoming

I am installing a Lyc. Promotional material indicates a empty weight a about 800 lbs. I believe the MOD will increase this by about 25 lbs. Some of you have completed the MOD. How do your weights compare? For Lyc users-Empty Weight? Regular or light weight starters and alternators? Prop type, pitch, dia? Cruse speed? Rate of fuel burn at a specific power setting. Where is your battery? What does it weigh. Did you have to add ballast and where? Anything else?

O-235 powered Zodiac ZL

I'm using a O235 Lyc and would like to hear from other builders.
Weight with or without paint? Lightweight starter/alternator? Type and location of battery? Fuel tanks? Prop-Make/Dia/Pitch? Cruise speed at what RPM? Any thing else that comes to mind. Ed Hamilton (609)971-8757(30 mi North of Atlantic Cith NJ)
