750 Flying Technique

Currently I'm focusing on landing the 750 under a range of configurations and circumstances . . . and I find the process challenging and FUN. I find turning from base fo final and on down to the numbers holding 60 seems comfortable, with or without power. Without power flare is nearly nonexistent. I like to have the wheels touch just as the stick is full back. I would love to hear how others relate to flying (and especially landing) the 750. Peter

CH 650 Kit Evaluated by FAA

In a letter dated June 24, 2011, Terry Allen, manager of the FAA Production and Airworthiness Division, stated that the Evaluation Team determined that the kit will “allow an amateur builder to meet the major portion requirement of Title 14, Code of Federal Regulations part 21, Certification Procedures for Products and Parts, § 21.191(g),” known as the…

Elevator not Stabilizer

See what I mean about mistakes, meant elevator not stabilizer in both the blog and pic.  Guess I learned this time to proof before post???

Completed the Stabilzer

I finished the stabilizer yesterday, I ended up changing both the hinges to a 2" open because I was not happy with the rivet to edge spacing.  I made many of the parts twice and if I were paying myself minimum wage I am sure that I would be in the price range of a Bonanza.  With 99.9% of the build ahead of me can anyone say Gulfstream?

It sure is fun and I am learning from every mistake I make!

Polishing

While waiting for some extra hands to stow my left wing I decided to polish a section. After cleaning it with mineral spirits I went over it with Nuvite F9 and it REALLY brought out some hand prints that I didn't see before. I went over it again with F9 and the prints are still there. Anybody got a solution.

Jabiru CHT temps high one one side - EGT's OK.

Jabiru CHT temps high, on 2,4,6, but 1,3,5 OK.

All EGT OK.

I flew my new Zodiac for the first time today, It was great, except for the high CHT.

I had someone else fly it first, did my GA conversion and flew it today.  I was told cyl 4 was too hot (170 C), so I installed a baffle in the ram air duct above cyl 4. (Jabiru 3300), The test are much cooler.

When I flew it cyl 6 was hottest.= the baffle cut air to 6.

I tried cutting off the lip on the cowl, and…

Wooden control grip

A few weeks ago I came across these neat wooden control grips on Aircraft Spruce.

Pioneer Aircraft control grip

The only problem was that the grips were for right hand only. I had cut the "Y" off my 601XL stick so the control column diameter was about 1.135" diameter. These on ACS were a maximum of 1" diameter. I contacted Guy at Pioneer Aircraft and asked if he could make a grip with…

How difficult Are Zenith Floats To Build?

Since posting pictures on this site I have had lots of requests for information, and pictures of my 1450 Amphib. float build.

Zenair has an instructional web page set up just for this purpose.http://http://zenairfloatassembly.com/1450A/ . It is sort of hidden away unless you are looking for it. Go to this page and look over the instructions for both the "parts kit" and "pre-drilled kit". You will notice the…

Update - Authorization for Special Issuance of a Medical Certificate

Went in for my flight physical on June 27th and passed. All my data was current with the FAA and I was issued a temporary Third Class Medical Certificate valid until the FAA sent a letter with the requirements to maintain the Special Issuance.

The letter arrived yesterday and I have been granted a 6 year Authorization for Special Issuance of Medical Certification, expires 2017. They have also changed my requirement to submit data to every 24 months to coincide with the flight…

Traveling to Oshkosh- Places to Stay along the Journey

Hey guys,

I'm planning on traveling to Osh from Dallas/FW Texas.  I'd like to suggest that we should all communicate with each other as to who might have a place to park a plane, or who might have a place to park a person for the night while traveling.  My biggest concern with this trip is getting stuck in weather.  If anyone is available as an emergency destination, or just willing to host a couple travelers Zodiac builders between DFW-Tulsa-Columbia MO-Brodhead WI-OSH…

Dynon Autopilot Installation

I have a Dynon D-10A,SV-32 roll servo, SV-32C pitch servo, Dynon HS34 to connect my King KLN-90B GPS.  I connect thru the ARINC data channels(Dynon com speed set to slow). The HS34 allows you to set the heading bug, altitude, and baro.  I track a GPS course, Heading bug, or GPS Nav for flight plans and it climbs/descends to altitude bug.  Calculated winds aloft are shown on the HSI page display.  Dynon sensitivity in Roll and Pitch is set to 25 (highest).  In thermal environments, with +-…

Cleaning the Canopy for the First Time

The canopy on my Zodiac was coated with engine oil which had been sprayed by the prop blast during initial run-up testing.  On top of this oil was several months of accumulated garage dust, grit, and debris.

I've noticed a rather disturbing tendency for visitors to rub the canopy in what I believe is simply an instinctive desire to make a clean spot.  Given that it's summer now, there are more people stopping over, and more people wanting to reach over and wipe off part of…

Repairman Certificate Amateur Built

Finally got around to applying for my Repairman Certificate. My XL is an EAB, Experimental Amateur Built. I applied last year when I received my Airworthiness, but it was kicked back by the Salt Lake City FSDO. You are required to apply in person, Boise and Portland have the same requirement.

I had been using my plans as my building log, writing the date on the pages that section was completed. There were many pictures stored on my laptop. And I sent the link to my Blog page here at…

Zenair News...

The latest issue of Zenair News arrived yesterday. Jon did a good job, as always! There's something about seeing video of someone else having completed their aircraft that's always encouraging.

Wing Repairs - Flap Surgery

Some of you remember Lydia, the young lady we found in a market last year with an arm contracture.  Well, a year on she has been busy building and maintaining aircraft and today is undergoing flap surgery to start the repairs to her right wing.

Before going to surgery our team of West African girls sent to the workshop for an oil change...…
