Touched 200 Hrs on the Tac Today

During a wonderful flight over the Florida Keys (OAT at 1500' was 69 degrees) with clear skies the Tac touched 200 hours today. All mine! (Oh okay, I guess Garry at AMD did do some test flights after the annuals)

Flying for fun and finding it!

Camping

One of the advantages of a STOL airplane is the ability to explore the countryside and to land at non-traditional airfields (a.k.a. farm fields and country roads). Weekend trips usually include overnight stays, usually in a pup-tent.

At the Sebring Sport Aircraft Expo, Bjorn Spelter of Germany demonstrated his new tent on the STOL CH 701:

This lightweight tent uses no tent poles at all...

Time to sell our beloved CH701 amphibian

We bought N701ST in the fall of 2001 and my son and I have had a great 8 years exploring the Eastern midwest with it. It's now time to start taking my wife on vacations again so we are putting it up for sale. There is a ad on Barnstormers.com and on the Seaplane association web site.

Issue #170 (January/February) shipping now!

The January/February issue #170 is starting to ship this weekend -including an hour long DVD inside!

Inside this issue are several how-to write ups from builders, including installing landing lights in the slats of a 701, and upgrading the lights in a 601XL with the new LED technology. Also, how a builder adapted the strut fairings from the 801 kit to work nicely on his 701.

The video DVD included with the newsletter features one builder's progress with a 914… Continue

750 progress

Today, after fnishing a few details on the rear fuselage bottom, Jon began the rear fuselage for the passengers side. The design of the corner extrusion's joggle makes an easy job of fitting the skin. Windows and control openings came cut from the factory. Every time a new box is opened, much time is spent salavating over the parts.

"Zenair News" Complete Archive Available on DVD

The Zenair Newsletter is excited to announce the availability of a computer CD disk that contains a compilation of the last 166 issues of the newsletter, spanning over 30 years!

For the first time, this CD archive allows a Zenith builder or pilot to have access to the entire wealth of information and history available in the complete library of newsletters. It was quite an undertaking - each and every back issue was scanned onto an easy to use CD… Continue

Welcome to my 801

Hello to all and welcome to my 801. This has been a long and interesting journey and is nearing the end of phase one Construction. I did not intend to take this long in the construction of this airplane but as builders know stuff happens. Also I did not take into account the fact that I would not be able to work on the airplane six months out of the year, winters here are just too cold and I did not have access to heated hangar in which to work, so winters were time away from building. I have… Continue

Nature - our biggest enemy!

Operating in the Tropics we seem to have many extra challenges compared to more temperate regions - a sort of war against natures natural desire to ensure entropy wins and gravity sucks! Getting around gravity is easy, thanks to Zenith aircraft and their desire to break free from the bonds of the earth - but there are other challenges that Zenith hasn't yet thought of... Here are just some of them - and how we get around them, where possible... (perhaps you have some advice or other challenges… Continue

Plans VS Kit?

Starting to work on my 601 Rudder and just had an epiphany, ....can I do both kit and plans? I'm a beginner builder with very little experience and feel that I can accomplish the rudder, stab, and fuselage but I am a little reluctant to visualize me building the critical wing via plans only, as well as the landing gear. Can I just order those as kits when the time comes?

V/r,
Tim

A Copy or Not a Copy:

I laughed out loud when I saw this photo! It clearly states that it's a "Zenair STOL CH-701" on the side, and even shows the Zenith logo on a tail that is obviously not a Zenith tail... Does anyone know what the fuselage and tail sections are? (the wing profile does indeed look like that of the STOL CH 701)...

Usually a pretty obvious copy will call itself an "original design,"… Continue

Proud new member of 650 plans!!

I'm Mike van Rensburg from Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, South Africa. Received the 650 plans yesterday and very eager to start. I have done a lot of research and planning. Now that I've received the plans & photo manuals even more studying will take place!!!!

Will start to work on the rudder very soon. Was very fortunate to attend a rudder workshop early in December when Philip Cronje of Bundu Aviation (Zenith dealer in South Africa) came to PE to deliver Michael Hübsch's 801… Continue

Working on the spars

Today I worked on the right wing spar with my grandpa. We riveted the bottom of the spar using the C-riveter that I had made previously.

The last time I tried to rivet the spar, after 5 rivets in the center the spar started to bow out, so I stopped. This time, however, I started one rivet in the middle, and only set it about half-way (3 hits on the hammer). This was enough to hold the parts together without really clamping them tight. Then we… Continue

Flying with my iPhone - Part 2 (InstaMapper)

I went flying in the STOL CH 750 yesterday (to test a new Sensenich wood prop) and used InstaMapper to track my position online in real time. That means that anyone (with access to my free InstaMapper account) can view my position in real time from the internet: Neat!

To start "broadcasting" my position, all I do is start "GPS Tracker" on my iPhone, as shown above. (GPS Tracker is the… Continue

Changing Lives with Zenith Aircraft

As we enter 2009 we all look back to what we did and forward to what we would like to do. One thing is for sure 'We can't change the past, BUT we can shape the future'.

Here in Ghana, West Africa, through WAASPS and Medicine on the Move (www.medicineonthemove.org) we see aviation changing lives every day. Through training people to build aircraft, teaching them to fly and setting up the first West African flying doctor service.

We operate the largest private airfield in… Continue
